George H. Germann

February 13, 1947 - January 14, 2025









George H. Germann, 77, of Belleville, formerly of Huntingdon, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Hershey Medical Center.


He was born on February 13, 1947, in Huntingdon, PA to the late William and Suanna (Havens) Germann.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (Pool) Germann on November 1, 2023.  He was also preceded in death by a step-daughter, Elizabeth Goodwin.  


He is survived by children:  Derek Germann and wife Janice of State College, Allison Smithmyer and husband Paul of Huntingdon, Nathan Germann and Daryl of Altoona; step-daughter:  Margaret Goodwin and husband Carl of Harbeson, DE, seven grandchildren; and his first spouse, Nancy (Heaton) of Alexandria.


Most of his life was spent in broadcasting and newspaper in the Altoona and Huntingdon areas.  He retired from The Daily News in Huntingdon in 2012.


He was a Christian by faith, most recently attended Valley View Haven Chapel.  He enjoyed woodworking at one time and was once an avid sports fan.  He enjoys watching Penn State Football.

In life, you’re lucky if you meet a few people along the way that have a profound and lasting impact on you. For me, one of those people was George Germann. George was the first news director I had at my first job after college at WRTA Radio in Altoona, Pennsylvania back in 1988. George laid the foundation for what has been a 37 year career in journalism so far, and taught me much of what would shape me into the journalist I am today. The article in the newspaper really told of George Germann's genius and contributions to his community through his reporting skills. It is nice that so many people appreciated him and will miss him. I know I will. He was so good to my mom from the start of their marriage in 1999, and then especially when they moved to Valley View about 13 years ago. He took very good care of Mom and as the years passed, I could see she was getting more and more “out of it” with dementia. But George hung in there with her. I even told him a few years before she went into the nursing home part of Vally View, that if he saw…
