Richard L. Byler

November 1, 1955 - December 31, 2022


Richard L. Byler, 67, of 4226 East Main St., Belleville, passed away at 11:18 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, St. College.


He was born on Nov. 1, 1955 in Lewistown, a son of the late John L. and Mary (Yoder) Byler. On May 29, 1976, he married Patricia L. (Butts) Byler. She resides in Belleville.

Along with his wife, he is also survived by: his daughters, Carla Banks & husband Marvin Banks, Jr. of Rossiter, PA and Kelsey Toomer & husband Marcus of Pleasant Gap; two grandchildren, Brianna Baumgardner & Alex Baumgardner, three brothers, Jay R. Byler & wife Joy of Belleville; Rodney L. Byler & wife Ruby of Hesston, KS; and Boyd E. Byler & wife April of Belleville, as well as a sister-in-law, Bonnie DeArment & husband Charlie of Belleville and a brother-in-law, John Butts and wife Julie of Reedsville.

Richard graduated in 1974 from Kishacoquillas High School. He was employed at APM, Belleville Oil Company, KV Oil Company, Ivan J. Zook & Sons in Belleville, and lastly with Ryder Logistics in Lewistown and as a maintenance personnel with Sun Home Health Services.

He was a 45-year active member of the Belleville Fire Company, where he began his membership in May 1977. He was a former member of the Big Valley Ambulance Club, a member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, and took an active part in the Kish Creek Tournament every year, as well as many other community events.

He was an accomplished carpenter, enjoyed playing golf and taking trips to Myrtle Beach with his friends every year to golf, cooking, smoking meats in his smoker, collecting Hess trucks, doing yardwork and gardening. He had also enjoyed coaching his daughters in softball when they were young.

He served as part of the stage crew at the Grange Fair for many years and he and his wife would camp there as well. He also worked as security at the Bryce Jordan Center for a number of years.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2023 at Maple Grove Mennonite Church with Pastors Alan Kauffman & Herb Zook officiating. Burial will take place at Allensville Mennonite Cemetery following the service. His family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Maple Grove Church.
